A dual-snorkel air cleaner! Good for around 10 horsepower WITHOUT a tune, although it will require a bit of custom work to get it to fit around the A/C pipes. The cost for any air cleaner at my local junkyard? $20. Add some dryer duct, and boom! You have cheap horsepower. What does Oppo think?

Are you including the sticker HP in that estimate? It’s at least +5hp

Go for it.

Damn beat me to the sticker joke.

Air cleaners don’t make a difference unless they a funneling cold air from outside the car inside the car, even then it’s pretty negligible.
Get an open element air filter at a parts store if you want it to make induction noise.

I count for the sticker. I’m doing it, mainly because I want to see if it will produce induction noises.

I’m planning on ducting these to exit out near the bumper filler, so they can get cold air into the carb.

Thanks!

You’ll gain more power from a fresh set of plugs, cap and rotor.
Then advance the crap out of the timing and run it lean, the low comp motors will take it.

That’s good. But this is gooder.

What about the ones that are basically one giant filter? I've thought about putting one like that on my truck but haven't bothered looking at the cost or if they actually work.

Computer controlled timing + mechanical sympathy = a no-go on the timing front. Aren’t the headers a bit in the way of the plugs on the 305?

They’re a bit on the expensive side for me.

Dunno if you can do it on the Cutlass, but if you just want some sweet induction noise, flip the air cleaner lid upside down. I used to run my K20 that way, of course it had lots of hood clearance.

I have no idea if I have enough space for that. Maybe I’ll just upgrade plugs.

If its a chevy 305, then it’s difficult to get to because of the exhaust placement.
If its an olds 307, its a little easier to get around the exhaust but the engine is wider.

It’s a 305. I guess I’m going in with a flex head from underneath the car.

If only I had money.

I’d agree with Jedidiah, if you can afford it, I’d go with an open element filter. But, if you want to go the dual snorkel route (which, as you pointed out, is probably a hell of a lot cheaper), I’d say go for it. Especially if its the awesome L69 dual snorkel that you pictured.

But do they work?

Flip the air cleaner lid.
Get a good filter.
Win.

What year is the car? The ecu will control how much extra it’ll add to the base timing at certain RPMs. You can change the base timing though....

1984, so OBDI

Really well.

Just looked up prices. Holy crap. The cheapest I saw was $120, for what's essentially a big filter.

Yeah. They’re not cheap. Just do the lid flip on your truck and enjoy glorious induction noise.

Haha. You hear exhaust and wind noise in my truck. New rubber deals may help a little with the wind noise but my truck is loud. I couldn't imagine hearing induction noise on it.

You should be able to advance the timing 4 degrees past specs with zero issues.

Even with computer-controlled HEI?

Ahh. I’ve heard of guys retrofitting the older style HEI distributors. I always dealt with the older stuff when it came to GM.
